Do you know, I had such utmost confidence in returning home that I had begun practicing my farewells.

[Susan appears on the side of the path as he walks forward, black cloak billowing in a nonexistent wind.]

I suppose I was wrong, for once.

Guess there's always a first time.

[Stepping over loose rocks on the dirt ground, he shrugs and readjusts the straps on his shoulders. She may note that he's not at all concerned about this turn of events. In fact he looks more at ease than ever.]

It's very irritating, you understand.

[Susan seems relatively unconcerned as well, though she never seems terribly concerned about anything barring extreme circumstances. There is, however, something of a frown on her face.]

I believe I'm still trying process the concept that I'm going to have to deal with Edward for the rest of my life. It might take a while to sink in.

Sure.

[This is said with something of a smile to contrast her frown. Unlike Susan, he's been wrong plenty of times, but this time it actually feels good to be wrong. Slugger watches her for a moment before he directs his attention to the partially built town.]

So what are you going to do?

Bemoan my fate for a bit. It seems appropriate.

[Susan glances down at Slugger with a gentle expression. Or what passed as a gentle expression for her, anyway.]

...Of course, you can't be left completely on your own. Whenever I'm finished moping, I suppose I'll have to take charge of the school as none of you will be interested in educating yourselves, I'm sure.

[Must you mention school at a time like this, Susan? He looks slightly less content at the prospect of homework and sitting at desks.]

Take your time.

Oh, no, I'd hate to let all of you down. The spring semester is almost upon us, isn't it?

[Susan smiles benignly.]

[strike_you_out]

[He turns to her, mildly defensive.]

But it's not even Hogswatch...

Lots of preparation to do. Perhaps I'd better mope and plan my lesson schedule at the same time... It will be more productive that way.

[There's still a glimmer of hope yet.]

What if the school's still not built?

Then that will have to be our first assignment, won't it? Learning to draw structurally sound blueprints seems like an important lesson to learn if we're going to be remaining here for any length of time.

[In anything resembling a battle of wits with Susan, Slugger knows when to surrender. But while they're on the subject of building projects...]

We should start small. Maybe... a house?

[Because she'll need somewhere to mope, right?]

We can use one of the half-built ones in the neighborhood and begin preparing for renovations.

Remember, needless suffering builds character.

[This can't be the first time he's heard that line before. Slugger directs his gaze to the ground where he distractedly toes a chunk of rock at his feet. There is something he has been meaning to ask Susan since they arrived here.]

Things will be different now. [He continues to look nowhere but at the ground as he speaks.] But can we still be a family?
