[he had come to the edge of town for a similar reason; different motives, perhaps, but a definite shared sentiment. he stops just shy of the edge when Slugger turns, staring out into the sky.]

It's nice to be on the outside looking in for a change, hm?

It was time to say goodbye.

[Where he stands at the peak of the rubble hill, Slugger pulls the straps of his backpack onto his shoulders.]

That's why you're here? To look in?

[a soft hum, neither in agreement or disagreement. he shifts where he stands, looking a little restless in spite of the placid expression on his face.]

I suppose. This is as close to looking in as we'll ever get, yes?

Probably. [He descends from the heap, half climbing, half sliding.]

Where do you want to be?

Here is fine. [for now, at least. he's fairly certain he won't ever have a proper answer to that question.]

Are you pleased with the way things have gone?

[strike_you_out]

Yes. [Charles may think poorly of him for what he's about to say but it's the truth.]

I hated Mayfield but I never wanted to leave. I don't care if I'm a copy - this place is my home.

[he doesn't have it in him to feel much outside of a limited and mostly apathetic range. even if he doesn't agree with that opinion, it brings about little more than a sloping shrug.]

If that's the case, you'll be able to make something decent of it. This place, I mean.

I can be who I want to be here. [Truthfully, this is the only place where he could have that kind of choice.]

What will you do?

There aren't any restrictions, true. [a silent nod of agreement. it's not enough to placate him by any means, but he won't write off the benefits of this new city, either.

he sits on the question for a moment, mulling over his answer. there are a lot of things he could say, but in the end it boils down to:] Wait.

For the end?

[It's a grim possibility but he's never known Charles to be a radiant beacon of cheer.]

[he glances up and over, looking vaguely amused.]

Perhaps. I can't say with certainty. [somewhat grim, but entirely honest.]

[Well, if that was Charles' decision, there's nothing left to do but respect it. Though he sort of suspects Charles just doesn't know what else to do.]

What did you do before Mayfield?

[ah— he hadn't even thought of that. the question sparks a look of realization]

I waited then, too. [it isn't very funny, but he almost laughs anyway] For someone instead of something, but waiting all the same.

So what did you do while you waited? Kill people?

[After seeing that move Charles pulled when they were in the glitch dimension, he has to wonder.]

[and he actually does laugh at that. it's the most outward expression he's shown in days]

You always get straight to the point. I did, but it wasn't my sole purpose. I had enemies, and I had to keep myself fed. Killing in that environment is only natural.
