[He eeps and backs away, though he doesn't look scared at all.]

Well I'm very grateful but I'm useful enough!

[He frowns, then spins on his heel to keep going.]

...Just hurry up and follow me.

["Brat" is what Czes thinks in his head. What he says out loud, though, is]

[before he goes after Firo and holds out a nail and the hammer to him when they get to the front door.]

[He nails the sign onto the door and steps back to look it over. It's only a little crooked.]

...So there we go. It's ours now, I guess.

[He can't imagine himself living in this place; he just wants the real Firo's apartment back.]

... It's weird living in a house huh? You told me once you've lived in one apartment or another all the time. Maiza's been living in one the last few years, too.

[He looks down at Czes, nodding. He didn't realize how obvious he was being with his apprehensions.]

...Yeah. Even after bein' in this place so long I never really got used to it...

[It occurs to him that he has no idea in what kinds of conditions Czes has lived.]

What about you?

... I was traveling a lot. I lived more to the west, but I got a letter from Maiza and I decided to visit him.

Now I'm living in New York, so I haven't really settled in anywhere enough to get a weird feeling here.

[foundafamily]

[He nods. He's not much one for traveling, but he knows from people like Claire that it has an appeal. And sometimes it's just a necessity.]

...Well, whatever it is, it's good we have... shelter. And it doesn't look like it'll collapse on us or go up in flames.

[He still shies at the thought of calling it home.]

I think we'll be okay as long as we're careful about what we do with it. Well, do you want to go take a look around now?

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.

[They need to get to know the area; to learn where it could be dangerous and where he could hide Czes safely if their house is compromised.

Of course, for Czes's sake he's going to pretend they're going about it for an adventure. He doesn't realize that Czes is probably a step ahead of him in the survivalist game.]

Which way do you wanna check out?

I think what we should check out first is where the center of this town is! That's where the big streets should be, so we'll be able to find where the businesses are and anything important in here.

That's a really smart idea.

[He scratches his head at the mention of business.]

I guess I'll need a new job here. Anything should beat buildin' the same damn house every day.

You know, Claire Stanfi....eld [there's a bit of hesitation there, after accidentally blurting out his name without thinking then getting scared of the name halfway through. so goes Czes' life] worked at a bar. Since you were always at Alveare anyway, maybe you can look for something at a bar or a restaurant?

Yeah, that's right!

[He assumes the hesitation is just Czes not being sure of Claire's last name. As far as he knows, the two didn't know each other before Mayfield.]

I think I might actually like that. And I bet people are definitely gonna need a drink after all this...

Are you gonna go to school, you think?

I don't want to. I've never gone to school before, but I don't have to! I taught myself a lot of things.

[foundafamily]

Relax, I'm not gonna make you. You do what you want--just so long as it's safe, okay?

[Czes probably knows more than he does about most "school" subjects.]

Besides, it's really boring.

[You should read some more, Firo. It'll help you, and you wouldn't have to wear glasses to "look smart."]

You too, Firo. When you get reckless we won't have enough bandaids if we bought an entire store of them.
